Cursed

Listening to Corey say on Skype, "No! Don't call it that! That only reinforces it!"
Sniffing.
Corey and I are cursed. Since we started dating, almost every time we're supposed to see each other, or we plan something special, something goes wrong. Usually, it's illness. I like to think of the Curse as a hurdle we have to jump in the race to seeing each other.
It began before we even started dating - that first kiss over Thanksgiving break. I had just gotten over a cold slash was still on medication. So when I kissed him, I was kind enough to share my germs with him. He was sick off and on until Christmas, when he gave them back.
This past Christmas, we planned to go to Disney World - something we'd been planning since we were first friends. And what happened? Corey came down with the flu because he never got the flu shot. Then even though I had, I caught it, and we went to Disney anyways. Both miserably sick. Then the flu turned into a sinus infection, and ultimately for me, strep.
This February, we both got sick after we'd seen each other, our bodies seeming to give up as soon as we set eyes on each other. They'd gotten us to our goal and they didn't have to try anymore. And then the morning of the day Corey proposed, I got a drink that was a little stronger than I bargained for, and got more drunk than I'd ever been in my life (which still isn't that drunk, but everyone was worried I'd be too hung over that night to say "yes").
Now, we're a week and three days from seeing one another for the first time in months, and we're both at the point of exhaustion where we've finally collapsed into sickness. If this isn't a Curse, I don't know what is. I'm chugging tea and popping cough drops like they're lifesavers, and he's guzzling coffee and stewing in denial, our respective cures. We have to get better.
See, this isn't an ordinary weekend getaway. November 10 is the Marine Corps birthday, and there's going to be a ball to celebrate. Like freaking Cinderella. It's taken me months to convince Corey to take me to this thing, because I'm dying to see him in his dress blues, and I love dancing. He has much less enthusiasm towards both. I'm driving on the interstate all day (one of my biggest fears) to get up there and see him and to go to the ball with him, and dang it, I'm going to be healthy. We're even going to be sitting with his best friend up there, Raggy, and his girlfriend Audrey. It's one of those nights that as of now, everything is set up for it to be a perfect and wonderful night. The only thing that would ruin it instantly is both of us being sick and not being able to enjoy ourselves.
If the Curse ruins this night for us, I can only imagine what havoc it will wreak on our wedding day.
Any advice for getting over your sickness with quickness? See what I did there?

What's in my Bag? Backpack Edition!

Listening to Blood by The Middle East (You may recognize it from the end of Crazy Stupid Love)
Subsisting on tea and cough drops
So. I start classes in a week. It's only fitting that I get sick, right? It started off as a stomach bug, but it's turned into a killer cold, complete with cough, congestion, and hot nails in my throat. My room is a hot zone, I sound like a man, and I keep finding tissues wedged in all manner of weird places. And yet I'm blogging. For you special seven people.
I even went out Saturday - even though I was so sick I had to call out of work (I had a fever and was throwing up; they wouldn't have wanted me anyways) - to buy school supplies for a back to school post. It was also the last day of tax-free weekend, and since I just spent 237 smackaroos on twenty books for school, there was no way I was paying sales tax on my school supplies, dangit.
I don't know about y'all, but I have a special place in my heart for school supplies. Having gone to a private Christian school for half my life where we wore uniforms, the primary way we (at my school anyway) expressed ourselves was through our school supplies (and tennis shoes). We bought the biggest pencil boxes available and filled them with every pencil, pen, eraser, gel pen, sticky note, highlighter and mini stapler we could find. Bonus points if they were Lisa Frank or rainbow colored. By fifth grade we discovered the world of trading. "I'll give you my cloudy patterned sticky notes for your sparkly blue gel pen and scented eraser set." It was insanity. It actually got banned in seventh grade because it was distracting us from class and making kids who couldn't afford to buy the entire stock of Staples feel bad. So we would trade "on the black market" during recess behind closed doors. It was super sketch.
Weird as it is, I still feel an adrenaline rush when I see a cool pen or squishy pencil grip. I did have to stay on the cheaper end of the scale as far as my school purchases this weekend. Also I was in a drug-induced fog so I didn't stand looking at things for too long before chucking 'em in the basket and coughing into my sleeve. (I'm pretty sure a middle eastern family thought I was racist 'cause I kept avoiding them in the store, but truthfully they had three little girls under the age of ten and I didn't wanna get them sick.)
Anyways, here are some of the things I got that I thought were neat, and not too expensive. I know some people have already gone back to school, but us college kids have another week. Ish. Prices and links at the end of the post.

  1. Post-it Flags. Since I'm an English nerd, and I'm taking three English classes this semester, I'm gonna be writing papers left and right. My favorite way to keep track of important quotes is with these little boogers. I like the wider ones so I can jot down on the flag which point in my paper the quote on that page coincides with. Bonus points for color-coordinating the color of the flag with a certain character.
  2. Starbucks Cool Lime Refresher Instant Drink Mix. No, it's not as incredible as buying the drink at Starbucks. It's close, though. In my opinion, even though the packet is for 16 ounces, it's too strong. I usually use only half a packet, so the package lasts even longer than five drinks. I have yet to try the orange one, but with my love of everything citrus, I'm sure I'll love it.
  3. Cool Gear Thermos. Y'all. It looks like a can. How freaking cute is that? My mom bought it when she was at WalMart (one for me and one for Maggs), and I just think it's the coolest thing ever. She said it was supposed to come with a straw, but I don't mind using it as is. You push back the faux tab and it slides the covering back from the little opening. My work friends made fun of it, but I'm pretty pleased with it. Plus, it's water tight when it's shut, so if I need to give my refresher a little shake before drinking, it won't make a mess!
  4. Bic Erasers With Grips. I'm weird, y'all already know that, but there are a few things whose textures I don't like. The feeling of newspaper is one. Erasers are another. I don't know why. I just don't like it. When I buy erasers for school, I always get the clicky ones (where you click it up and down?) so I don't have to actually touch the erasers. Those, however, were twice as expensive as these, with their little grips. So I'm trying something new. Wish me luck!
  5. Pentel EnerGel-X Express Roller Gel Pens. Long name, but I'll let it go because these are the greatest pens on the planet. Because I do so much writing, I have very specific preferences on my writing utensils. I stole a pen from Maggs a few months ago and freaking loved it. But within a few weeks it was already out of ink. I scoured Target, Walmart, and CVS for the pen to buy more, but couldn't find any. I found the InkJoys at WalMart and decided they were a fair enough substitute, until I visited Staples with Suzanne a few weeks ago. I found them, you guys. And not only in black, but in super bright awesome happy colors. You know how much I love bright colors. So you better believe when I went looking for school supplies I zeroed in on these babies and snatched them like a crazed bargain shopper at a store closing sale. I don't have a problem. Anymore.
  6. Pilot Frixion Erasable Highlighters. Who here gets overexcited with the highlighter and colors a whole page neon orange? *raises hand* These, my friends, are for us over-eager highlighters. They're erasable. I have no clue if they actually work. I haven't opened them yet. But the back of the package says, "Unique Thermo-Sensitive Ink formula disappears with erasing friction." Sounds legit, right? I'll keep you updated.
There you have it. My Backpack Essentials. Some of which may or may not be as awesome as they claim. Which makes it exciting.

And I'm going back to bed.

Peachy

Listening to What A Girl Wants Soundtrack (Yeah, the Amanda Bynes movie. You know you loved it.)
Craving Chick-fil-a - what's  new?
I know, I fell off the face of the earth. Again. I've been a bit busy. But on the bright side, when I have time, I've been working out with my bffl Suzie-cutes, and I even signed up for classes yesterday - right? I do have to meet with my adviser this coming Monday or Tuesday to officially change my major to English Ed, and hopefully get into one more class if he has mercy on my procrastinating soul, but aside from that I'm set up for a busy semester! I recently had some stuff done to my foot which put me out of the loop for a week or so, and had to get the same thing done again this past Monday, which was no fun, but with luck this will be the last time. In between those two incidents, of course, I got sick. But things are looking up!
I was doing so well, you know, with the whole Wordy Wednesdays thing, but I've got something to make it up to you - a recipe! I know, right? The queen of Chick-fil-A in a kitchen? What is the world coming to? But it's really yummy and summery, and get this: healthy. Stop the presses! Sarah Jane is becoming a health nut! ... Well, not so much, but I'm trying to do better. So here you go: Homemade Peach Frozen Yogurt!

All you need (for one serving) is two peaches, a small container of vanilla Greek yogurt, sugar or sugar substitute (I prefer sugar because Splenda isn't really good for you at all and Stevia just doesn't cut it for me. Plus it's only a teaspoon. If I'm doing sugar I'm doing it right.), and vanilla extract. Plus, you know, a freezer and a blender/food processor.
The vanilla isn't in the photo because I had to go buy some. hee hee.
Step One: Peel both peaches.
(Or ask a grown-up to do it for you! Nick Jr. anyone?)
Step Two: Slice into thin wedges and freeze for an hour. (I promise the wait is worth it.)
Step Three: Put the peaches in your blender/food processor and blend a little to chop them up. You may have to let them thaw a tad to get them out of the bowl, or if you're lazy like me, microwave for twenty seconds.
Step Four: Add half the container of Greek yogurt, one teaspoon vanilla extract, and one teaspoon sugar.
Step Five: Blend until smooth. You may have to stop and stir periodically. Frozen peaches are stubborn little things.
Step Six: Enjoy!
Super easy and super delicious! Plus it's not super unhealthy! And I'm sure it would be delicious with other fruits. Maybe like pineapple and mango? Yum!

Punder the Weather

from BellaRegazza931 at iconator.com
Listening to Sweet Afton by Nickel Creek. Very relaxing when you feel like death in a hoodie.
Chugging honey-lemon tea, eating honey-lemon cough drops, and burying myself in tissues.
In case you haven't guessed, I'm sick. Popped* into the minute clinic for a visit and they sent off a lovely little throat swab from yours truly - the symptoms just hit this morning, so they said the strep test may have given me a false negative. I can not get sick, though it's obvious I am. I'm going to visit Coco Bean on Wednesday, and I really don't want to make that trip sick. No fun at all.
I'm the kind of person who's totally useless when sick. I actually fell asleep in the Commons on campus today, in the middle of the lunch rush when it's super loud and busy. I put my head down on the table and fell asleep. It wasn't for long, though, because Johnny kept poking me and asking, "Are you sure you're okay?" To which I lied, "yes." I can't even take naps in my bed in a quiet room when I'm healthy, but when sick, tables look pretty comfortable. Once when I was in high school home sick, my mother asked me to throw in a load of laundry for her, which I did. Without soap. I was so out of it, I didn't think to put soap in the washing machine.
Also, I dislike doctors. Quite a lot. They have shots. And shots involve needles. And needles make Sarah's left eye twitch. That being said, I willingly took myself to the CVS minute clinic today. I even got a shot. That's right. I got the flu shot. I've got the band-aid to prove it. And I didn't even gag when she swabbed my throat! Okay, maybe that's a stretch. I didn't gag much. Hopefully I'll know by Saturday if it's just a virus or strep (no thank you). In the mean time... honey and lemon overdose.
On a more positive note - a few puns (and jokes)!
  • Our neighbor across the street recently got a new kitten. My sister Maggie loves cats. She nearly kisses the fur off of ours and they're fat and stupid, not young and adorable. She told me - in jest - that she wanted to break into their house and steal the kitten. I replied, "That would make you a cat-burglar." Ha! Oh c'mon. You have to admit that's a clever one.
  • At work, someone asked me how spicy the jalapeno cheddar bagels are. I said, "They have a little kick. You can bite these bagels, but they're gonna bite right back." Right? Right?
  • And today at lunch. With Johnny. I can't have a punday without Johnny. With my head down on the table, I moaned in misery. Johnny, thinking I said something, asked, "What'd you say?" "Nothing, I was just moaning. Like Myrtle," I joked. He gave me a look that said, I'm about to make this dirty. But I beat him to the punch. "Well," I said, "it was a basilisk." Sorry for those of you who find dirty/slightly sexual jokes offensive. I really couldn't resist. I mean, it was Harry Potter.
*At first, I accidentally typed "pooped." I was thisclose to leaving it, but decided that was just a little too far.

Confession Time

from aceshowbiz
Listening to Finger Snappin' by the Maynard Fergusen Octet
Trying to be a better, more successful, more organized human being
Warning: The following post is long winded. Brace yourself.
Here's the deal. I love concepts. And ideas, and theories, and notions. I think of lots of awesome ones all the time. Then I write them down in random lists that get stuffed in my purse or under my bed or in my desk or thrown in my car, which - let's face it - is a Dumpster with an engine and an iPod cord.
I love concepts, but I am so bad at seeing them to fruition. Let me clarify that. I'm bad at seeing them completely to fruition. I'm great at starting things. Finishing them, not so much. Which is why I have an entire art shelf full of beads and stones for my jewelry company, string for my super-awesome macrame bracelets, paints from my ambitions to become an artist, and a bowl of shells - I really don't even know on that one.
That's also why I frequently wake up with just enough time to jump out of bed, into whatever clothing is at hand and speeding like a madwoman to class. Every semester, I think, "Nine-thirty. That's nothing. I've made it to work at eight before plenty of times. A nine-thirty class is pie." Thing is, at the beginning of the semester I think I can eat that whole pie by myself. In fact, I get to class early a few times, eagerly devouring those first bites of sweet cherry pie morning goodness. Then I start to realize that I don't really like cherry-flavored anything. Why did I like this pie? The filling is just too sticky and sweet and it glues me to my bed, and I still have three-quarters of that stupid pie left, and did I realize how much it tasted like Robitussin when I first started eating it?
Where was I going with this? Oh right. Finishing things.
There are only a few things I have completely finished in my life. I know that sounds really sad, but this is going to be motivational for me, and you, my dear readerlings, are my witnesses:
  • Last year, I knitted myself a matching hat and scarf set. The most I've ever made was baby booties, and I can only use a pattern once or I get bored with it and don't want to finish it the second time. This year, I knitted one for Coco Bean, who has yet to receive it.
The blue hat and scarf are the ones I made. The black one on my sister is crocheted, and I didn't make it.

This is Corey's hat. The pom-pom is removable, and mostly a joke. Because I like to laugh.
  • I finished learning an entire jazz piece by Vince Guaraldi - improv and all - and can now play it without pause. In the past, I would learn the parts of the pieces that were more straightforward, and say, "I'll get to the improv," but I never did. This September, I learned the whole dang thing. And yes, I am very proud of it.
  • I wrote a book. No, it is not published yet, and no I haven't submitted it to be published, or queried an agent. I probably won't for a while. I'm still convinced it could be better, but that's not the point. The point is that I finished it, and even though I've been working on it for three years, I still love it as much as the first day I brain-birthed it in Anatomy my senior year of high school. Which means I'm still willing to put work into it to make it the best it can be before I send it out into the world. (See Anne Bradstreet's The Author to Her Book. Major poem love.) I even have ideas for other books, two of which I've been steadily working on, and I fully intend to finish both of them, too.
  • I wrote this super fun intermediate level piano piece that changes time signatures like mad, and bounces along in a way that always makes me smile. I guess I should've prefaced that by explaining that I've actually written quite a few piano pieces for my mom's students' recitals, but this one was one that had been marinating for quite some time, and when I finally got it out, I was actually really proud of it. The other ones were my mom saying, "Write a piece for [insert munchkin pianist here] that sounds like clouds/a hoedown/evil clowns under your bed," and I'd sigh dramatically, even though it would be easy, and write it. This one wasn't inspired by anything, and doesn't have a name. It was just me playing with a melody in my head. So I'm proud of it.
Those are the things that immediately come to mind, but there probably isn't much more, unfortunately. That being said, here are the things I want to accomplish this semester. I'm putting them here so that I'll be really embarrassed when... I mean if I don't accomplish them, which should spur me to complete them.
  1. I want to be nicer to people. Smile more, and be more grateful for what people do. I try to do this anyways, but I have a temper, I'll admit, and sometimes the temper sort of vomits anger and irritation on anyone in my path. This tends to scare people off. A few of my friends at work - Tyler and Andrew - have joked with me that the reason I'm not dating anyone is because I'm not a (pardon the language) "bad enough bitch". They say I need to act like "I'm a bad bitch and I know it." But the truth is, I'm not. I'm almost always a happy person; I love to laugh and make people laugh. On that note, my laugh is super loud and dorky, I bounce around when I get excited, and I don't have a problem with that. I'm a huge dork, and proud of it. So my efforts are going to go towards being more of the fun, silly, dorky person that I think God intended for me to be and know that I'll date someone who appreciates that whenever he comes along. (I don't know how this went from be nicer to people to wait for whoever God has planned for me, but I think that means something important. So I'm leaving it.)
  2. Try really hard to understand and do well in Statistics. At the beginning, things were easy and I was like, "Yeah! I'm gonna dominate this class!" And then Statistics rose like a sleeping tiger and said, "Psych! Watch me slash your butt to ribbons with my VARS claws!! Ha ha!" and the first test was a bit of a stinker. Now, math is not by any means my thing. I swear I'm a little dyslexic with numbers, although I was never diagnosed. I can't tell you how many times I miscount my drawer at work because I forget that there's a twenty-three between twenty-two and twenty-four, or I read the total as "71.36" when it's really "17.89" and the customer freaks out. And today in Stats, man my calculator and I were having some communication issues (I've got a letter for it for later on this week).
  3. I want to finish editing my book. Really badly. I have no idea if it will happen, since I have a massive amount of writing, reading, and analysis to do for my fiction writing class, but I want it to. Writing really is my passion, although I have recently accepted it is probably not how I'm going to be making bank in the future. But I do want to pursue it on the side at the very least, which I cannot do if I don't finish the thing. Getting a good draft of my next book down wouldn't be bad either, but I'll take what I can get.
  4. I'd love to be on time on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, so that I can bathe and look nice, and have coffee and not want to kill myself because I haven't been awake long enough. Doing all of the readings for my American Lit class wouldn't be bad either. I do some of them, I promise, but when I was reading Walden (sorry, Thoreau) I about plucked out my eyeballs. And I need them to read the sixteen - yes, sixteen! - books that I've begun and not finished and are all piled on my dresser. So this one kind of counts as two.
  5. Not complain so much at work. For the most part, I'm a pretty happy, loud, and nice person at work - I'm not going to say anything about my work ethic, because that's for others to say; this is just about attitude - but when I get in a mood, people can tell. I've been told that I complain about my problems a lot, and that I'm always down on myself (although not in a depressing way, if that makes sense - more like, ha-ha-my-life-sucks-but-I-laugh-about-it). That's not what I want, though, or what I mean to do. I don't need to unload my problems on my coworkers, or let any stupid useless emotions get the better of me, so I'm going to try very hard, and pray that I'm not a burden on anyone and that I can work with a joyful heart. Kinda goes with number four, but you get the picture.
  6. I want to do better at saving my money. In the middle of this summer I had nearly enough money to move out with three roommates, but it fell through, so I ended up just spending the money (on stuff for school, mind you, but spending it nonetheless). I will be flying up to North Carolina to visit Corey over Thanksgiving (even though I'm terrified of plane flights), and I need to have money for the flight, and also money to spend while I'm there so I'm not a burden on him or anyone else. And after that, I want to look for an apartment and roommates (any takers? I'm super fun to live with *cough cough*), so I'll need moneys to move out.
  7. This one's a bit more difficult, but try not to stress so much. Whenever I get stressed, I get tense, and irritable and my immune system crashes (like this past weekend, and um, now). My back and neck get super tight, and I literally cannot relax. Even if I'm laying in bed, sleeping, my body is still stiff and tense, and I sleep so hard I'm physically sore in the morning. I've been seeing my chiropractor for the past four weeks, and - although I haven't seen her in a while - she said my spine should be realigning properly by now, and staying that way, but it's not because as soon as she finishes adjusting me and I leave, the stress sets in and I start to tense up again. I know that's not a healthy way to live, so I want to make a conscious effort to stay more relaxed and not let things get to me so much. I've only got one life to live and I can't live it wearing my shoulders as earrings.
  8. Actually post my blog posts on time. Like, choose days of the week to post and do it, gosh darn it!
Sorry for those of you who read that whole thing - there probably aren't many of you left at this point. So here's something to make you laugh, because I laugh every time I see it. :)

Germ Bombing

Yeah, I just found this really funny.
Listening to Blackbird (the Glee version. I loved this, despite the fact that no one can do better than the Beatles.)
Also: sniffing, sneezing, and being generally miserable
If you haven't already guessed, I'm sick. Why am I up at 12:30 you ask? Well you see, dear reader, medicine doesn't take effect instantly, despite the fact that I completely believed that as a child, so I'm waiting for my NyQuil to kick in. Sometime over the last few days I caught a cold. And boy, is it a doozie. I'm sneezing like mad, stuffy and runny, and I've got a good cough brewing, too. Top it off with a sore throat and all-around puniness, and that's something to shake your tissue box at.
Luckily, my English professor will be at a conference today, so I don't have to try to get up and drive myself to my 9:30 class. That would be a hazard to the general public, anyways. My last class isn't until 6:30 tonight, so I'll have all day to muster the strength to stumble to my car.
The downside to this (despite the obvious, which is the actual being sick part) is that I have a hair appointment on Friday morning, work Friday night and Saturday night, and some important things going on Sunday that I really need to be well for. Consequently, I have been drinking hot tea all day, popping Advil for my throat, and carrying around a roll of toilet paper like it's a fashion statement. I tried using that cherry-flavored throat spray that numbs your throat, but due to the fact that I'm eight years old and can't control my tongue, I ended up spritzing that about five times and couldn't feel my tongue for half an hour. Yes, I am a complete moron - even when I'm not sick.
I actually lost my voice this morning, which hasn't happened since high school. It was so weird for me, so foreign, that I kept forgetting even though my throat was/is killing me. Driving to class and blasting the same song on repeat on my iPod, I kept trying to sing along, and nothing came out. Talk about confusing. I sing constantly and when the only noise that came out was a strangled whimpering noise, I was super disoriented.
My current problem is the fact that one side of my nose is completely stuffed up. No air's getting up there. Now, when I was little, I had my own way of dealing with this. I'm talking ten and under. I used to roll up a tissue and stick it up my nose and just leave it there. In my thoroughly mistaken little mind, this served a dual purpose - both prying open my swollen airways, and catching the runny-ness. I severely doubt this actually helped anything, except aiding me in looking like an idiot, which I didn't need help with, believe me. Now, I just keep rolling over and over and over and over and... you get the picture.
Well, I'm feeling heavy-lidded. Forget the teddy bear; tonight, my cuddle buddy is a roll of TP. I'll take Pathetic for a thousand, Alex.

And Coffee Went Everywhere

Pandora-ing Breakable by Ingrid Michaelson
New Addiction Mint Truffle Hershey Kisses
Remember when I mentioned how I needed to go to bed at a reasonable hour so I wouldn't be late for church and be proclaimed a heathen? Well, in case you weren't aware, three am is not a reasonable hour. Especially when you're coming down with a cold. Get comfy, I've got a couple of rants coming here, dear reader.
Let me just preface this first one by saying that I have a horrid immune system. And many strange ailments. But those I will not get into at the moment. What I am going to talk about is the fact that, from the second week of classes on, I have not gotten sick once. Not a cold, anyways. I was free from the common cold all semester, and yet now, two days after my classes end, my nose is threatening to fall off, and my throat is made of sandpaper. Feels great, reader, feels great.
Secondly, it did, in fact, snow today. Enough to coat my car during church this morning (which, yes, I was late for. Don't judge; I'm getting sick).

The only thing is, it's not quite cold enough for the snow to actually stick on the ground. It has coated some leaves and such that are laying on the ground, but aside form that it's really just floating through the air. Bummer.
It's almost eleven now, and it's still snowing a bit, but it hasn't stuck at all. It snowed almost the entire time I was at work, though. Speaking of work, guess who forgot to take the lid off of an urn of coffee when she made it, and let a whole urn of hazelnut cream coffee spill all over the floor. That's right, this girl, right here. My hands still smell like coffee, and I've washed them many times.
Also related to work, we close at eight on Sundays. Did that stop tons of people from coming in at seven fifty-five? Of course not. So I couldn't start my cleaning 'til they'd all left, which ended up being around eight-thirty. Boo that. Luckily, some very kind people (read: everyone who worked with me tonight) helped me out with all my cleaning; it was my first night closing on my own, and I honestly had no idea what I was supposed to do aside from the windows and floors.
So... Here I am, totally zonked and with nothing of particular interest to write about. Except that apparently (i.e. according to one of the managers) I sound like a dying cat when I sing gospel music. Epic Fail.

P.S. I've been trying to come up with a statement that is synonymous with "epic fail." Let's face it, folks, "epic fail" is completely overused. We need to give our everyday vernacular a little make-over every now and then. I was thinking something with the word "legendary"...
